Question 1

How is Domia different from a cloud assistant?

Accepted Answer

Domia is a voice agent that runs on hardware you own. It holds a conversation, remembers what you told it and acts through the skills you connect. Your voice is processed at home, there is no account, and you choose its name, voice and temperament.

Question 2

Are my conversations private?

Accepted Answer

They stay on your node. Audio, transcripts and memory are processed and stored on your hardware, and there is no account to sign in to. A skill you connect reaches only the service it controls. The privacy page says what is kept and for how long.

Question 3

What does it cost?

Accepted Answer

The software is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license. You provide the hardware it runs on.

Question 4

What do I need to run it?

Accepted Answer

A machine you own, a microphone and a speaker. A thin device covers a room and delegates the heavy work; a capable machine runs every stage itself; a hub-class machine serves several rooms. Domia adapts to your hardware.

Question 5

Does it work without internet?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Listening, understanding, the model and the spoken reply all run on your network, so conversation, memory and built-in tools keep working. Skills keep working when the service they control is also local; anything that lives in the cloud, such as a streaming provider, stops until the connection returns.

Question 6

Does it work in several rooms?

Accepted Answer

Yes. One hub can serve a Domia per room, each with its own name and voice, through a satellite in each room. Announcing something to every room, or opening an intercom between two, is done from the console's Broadcast page, not by voice.

Question 7

Can I reach it from outside my network?

Accepted Answer

It is made for your local network. When you are away, connect to that network through a VPN; the console is the way in.

Question 8

Can it control my home?

Accepted Answer

Yes, through the skills you connect; Home Assistant and Music Assistant are the providers tested every day. A known command takes the fast path and calls the skill directly. For anything else the model gets a shortlist of fitting skills and decides whether to call one or just answer.

Question 9

Does it work without Home Assistant?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Conversation, memory, the knowledge base and built-in tools such as timers, alarms, reminders and routines need nothing else. Home Assistant and Music Assistant add the house: lights, scenes, media and whatever else you expose to them.

Question 10

How do I add a skill?

Accepted Answer

Built-in tools such as timers, alarms and reminders work from the first turn. Other skills connect over MCP: in the console, open the Skills section of a Domia's configuration and connect an MCP server, such as Home Assistant or Music Assistant, and its tools start working. Each skill has a policy (allow, ask first or block) that you set per identity, so you can switch any of them off.

Question 11

How do guests use it?

Accepted Answer

They just talk to it. You write the knowledge base (wifi, house rules, meal times, phone numbers, local picks) and Domia answers from it. It answers only what you wrote; there is no web search.

Question 12

Can I interrupt it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Talk over the reply and it stops and listens. On a satellite the reply pauses instead of cutting off.
